Everything You Need To Know About Facial Toners

There are like a ton of fancy words for toners today like lotion, pre-lotion, tonic, skin fresheners , emulsion and astringent. Toners actually came from the word tonic water or tonic. Basically, toners were designed to be used after the cleanser. It's purpose was to remove any cleanser residue or anything else that cleanser didn't take off and toners also have added ingredients to prepare your skin for whatever is going on next usually like a serum or moisturizer.

A Tonic History

Tonic water came from around the same time as Eau De Cologne in the 1900s. It was known to soothe the nerve or take fatigue out of time muscles. The most common ingredients in toners were alcohol, tincture of benzoin, witch hazel extract which are all antiseptic properties. In addition to that, they also use glycerin, some fragrant scent with flower water or some coloring to make a more feminine pretty usually pink. However, quite often it's not that complex,it's usually just waters of the alcohol and some perfume.

The theory behind using astringent like alcohol, witch hazel and tincture of benzoin is that by cooling or refreshing the skin. It can produce a skin tightening effect and not only does this stimulate blood circulation, it also closed pores which now we know is a myth because pores don't open or close like windows anyhow these toners with astringent properties play an important role in fighting against blemishes.

Not long after people start to realize a different skin type hence for those who had dry skin will use a skin tonic which contain less astringent products and those with higher concentration of alcohol will be labeled as a stringent tonic for oily skin. It was later in the 1940 that the American Food  and Drug Administration disapproved what astringent and skin tones claimed.

They did for the skin and with the introduction of moisturizers in the 1960s, toners became more confusing and somewhat irrelevant in a skincare regimen. However, nowdays toners do a whole range of things from not only rebalancing the pH levels, hydrate the skin, refresh and cleanse the skim or residue. Sometimes, it can go as deep as working on the epidermis layer of the skin to do what serums are made to do.

Now toners are usually come in a bottle either in a splash opening and occasionally a pump form  some even with a push down top pump bottle. The texture of toners are commonly fluid, liquid-like and a very similar to water consistency. However, nowdays you can find toners with added rose petals or other flower petals. Some may even be a thicker texture like emulsion or a lotion.

How To Use A Facial Toner?

Toners are normally applied to a cotton ball or cotton pad and then wipe through the skin. However, toners can also be applied directly to the skin by pouring to the  palm of your hands and then splash or pressed on gently. Now the main difference between a cotton pad versus the hand is that the cotton pad will absorb most part of the toner which means that you will use up the toner a lot quicker and you also be wiping away unwanted stuff off the skin since you're disposing. The cotton pad it's more of a hygienic option on the other hand by applying directly on to the skin. There is less wastage and your skin actually absorbs everything.
